#Trump campaign would have to pay nearly $8 million for Wisconsin recount

MADISON, Wis. President Donald Trump’s campaign will pay close to $ 8 million to start recounting in Wisconsin, a state he almost lost two weeks ago.

Trump will have to decide on Wednesday whether to go ahead with the recount he has promised to pursue.

If his campaign upfront costs $ 7.9 million, the vote count will start as early as Thursday and complete by December 1, according to the State Election Commission.

Trump has been fundamentally raising the recount in Wisconsin and legal challenges in other states to try to overturn Democratic Joe Biden’s victory. If he does not continue his census in Wisconsin, he may use the funds raised for other purposes, such as paying off his election debt.

The cost of the recount in Wisconsin was nearly four times that of the recount in 2016. That year, Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s campaign paid just over $ 2 million for the recount. that they asked for.

Meagan Wolfe, director of the State Election Commission, said the recount would be much more expensive this year in part because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some counties will need to rent large halls to conduct recounting so that they can keep workers and observers away from each other.

“Cost also increases the cost of the short term and the need for security increases,” Wolfe said.

We have yet to receive any indication whether or not there will be a recount,” Wolfe said in a statement. “But we want Wisconsin’s voters to know we are ready.”

To save money, Trump could narrow his claim and demand that the recount be held in a handful of counties instead of all 72 of them. Trump’s campaign spokesman Anna Kelly did not immediately respond to the state’s cost estimate.

Counties are completing voting now, and final counties are expected to finish them off on Tuesday. So far, those results are only slightly different from the initial, unofficial results showing that Biden won the state with around 20,000 votes.
